With its fluid form and dynamic interwoven lines, Tirintas showcases rare artisanal skills and the playful use of materials' flexible properties. Each twist in the chair's metal frame is individually layered and shaped by the hands of skilled artisans. The outer screen, made of wood veneer, adds a decorative touch and further highlights the chair's Filipino identity.
The design process of Tirintas involved a collaborative approach, engaging local artisans in the development and prototyping stages. By combining modern techniques with traditional craft skills, the chair represents a shared experience, experimentation, and knowledge exchange.
The lounge chair's open structure invites users to experience the craft and connect with their surroundings. The seat is slightly tilted at the back and paired with cushions for optimal comfort, providing a relaxing position. The decorative screen not only adds visual appeal but also offers cover and security.
Tirintas was designed as part of a Masters degree project, starting in September 2013 and finishing in April 2015. The initial prototypes were developed in the UK, while the final design was completed in the Philippines. The chair was exhibited at the Central Saint Martins London Degree Show in June 2015 and the London Design Festival in September 2015.
Throughout the design process, Pesigan conducted extensive research, both primary and secondary, to understand the cultural context and craft production in the Philippines. Ethnographic fieldwork, interviews with artisans, and exploration of existing crafts informed the visual metaphor and materials used in Tirintas.
The collaboration with artisans presented challenges in terms of communication and managing expectations. However, the process resulted in the development of new techniques and fostered meaningful interaction between the designer and the local craft community.
Tirintas received the Iron A' Design Award in 2016, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities. The chair's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
With its blend of modernity and tradition, Tirintas is not just a piece of furniture but a celebration of Filipino culture and community. It exemplifies the power of design to bridge the gap between past and present, while honoring the skills and heritage of artisans.
